Our history
The Patrón Lunares canteen is located at number 30 of Calle de la Fábrica.
For 115 years, from 1894, at number 30 Calle de la Fábrica, in Palma’s emblematic Santa Catalina neighborhood, the Montepío del Arrabal relief society had its headquarters and meeting point. Its mission was to provide health care to its members, who were mostly fishermen, laborers, shoemakers and rope makers, at a time when medical care was limited.
At the heart of this story emerges Miguel Bonet Oliver, known as Patrón Lunares. Sailing fishing boats from a young age, he stood out as one of the best trawler skippers in Mallorca in an era where today’s technology did not exist. His skill lay in guiding by coastal signals, using headlands, mountains and even buildings as guides, sharing his valuable knowledge with young skippers who were just starting out in the art of fishing. He was a friendly man, rooted in his neighborhood of Santa Catalina. On his days off, he would meet in a bar in San Magín to enjoy his favorite pastime, Truc, being received with enthusiasm by the children, a gesture that he always rewarded with a few coins. A smoker until his death and an eternal abstainer, he was an honest man who was loved by all. In 1926, Miguel Bonet, a native of Santa Catalina, received the title of patron in recognition of his outstanding career.
